RecyclerList not displaying data from Cloud Firestore - Black screen

Hello everyone,

I’m building a movie app in Kodular, and I’m facing a problem with displaying data from Cloud Firestore in RecyclerList1.

:bullseye: What I’m trying to do:

Display a list of movies (posters) inside RecyclerList1, fetched from Cloud Firestore collection “movies”. Each movie document contains:

  • name (string)
  • poster (string, URL)
  • video (string, URL)

:gear: What I’ve already set up:

  1. Firebase Console:

    • Cloud Firestore is enabled.
    • Collection “movies” contains documents (movie_1, movie_2, etc.).
    • Security Rules: allow read: if true;
    • google-services.json is uploaded to Kodular Media assets.
  2. In Kodular (Screen2):

    • RecyclerList1 is initialized with GridLayoutManager, spanCount = 3.
    • Layout: VA_List (Vertical Arrangement) holds RecyclerList1.
    • I use Cloud_Firestore1.Query Run (collectionPath = “movies”) in Screen2.Initialize.
    • In “when Cloud_Firestore1.Got Documents”, I loop through documents using “for each item”, extract “poster” field, and add to global all_movies list.
    • I set RecyclerList1.Count to length of all_movies.
    • In OnCreateView, I create an Image component with tag “poster”.
    • In OnBindView, I set “Picture” property to the poster URL using all_movies list.
    • I added Label1 to check if “Got Documents” fires, but it stays empty.
  3. When I test the APK:

    • Screen2 opens with a black screen.
    • Label1 (added for debugging) is empty.
    • No posters are displayed.

:red_question_mark: My question:

Why is “Got Documents” not firing, or why is RecyclerList1 not displaying the data?

Is there a step I’m missing in setting up Cloud Firestore in Kodular? Should I use “Listen To Collection” instead of “Query Run”?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Are you actually getting the data ? So a data problem not a recyclerlist problem ?

Thanks Joe90 for your reply.

Yes, I added Label1 to check if the data arrives.
When Screen2 opens, Label1 stays EMPTY.
So I think the data is NOT arriving from Firestore.

I also tried “Query Run” with collectionPath = “movies”, but Got Documents is not firing.

Any idea why?

Hi dear,

Welcome to the Kodular community!

Have you tried adding the .FirestoreError block?
It might give us some additional information.
