I’m developing an app for blind people, which will use your smartphone camera to detect texts on images using an OCR. However, the OCR only supports images smaller than 1mb (1024kb). Is there any way to upload bigger images or compress the ones taken by the camera?

The free API Key only allows you to upload images up to 1MB. If you want bigger files, you need to purchase a pro plan.

Another question: If I pay for the OCR key today, am I able to cancel it before next month?
You can also use the ImageEditor component (under the Drawing and Animation category) and the GreyScale method before you send the image at OCR.space. This way the image will be reduced significant.
